Metro phase III hits fund hurdle
The fate of Delhi Metros third phase expansion is uncertain.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has sent a detailed project report for 85- kilometre network to be built in the next phase to the Centre as well as the state government.
The ministry of urban devel- opment in the meantime has said funds from the government would decide how many corri- dors will actually be taken up for construction.
“The ministry has to fund four more metro projects apart from Delhi. Since Phase III requires huge funding and Delhi govern- ment has already expressed its helplessness to give its equity share, we are exploring other options,“ said MoUD secretary M. Ramachandran, on the side- lines of DMRCs 16th foundation day function on Monday. Despite resource crunch Ramachandran said, timely completion of Metros second phase is a priority for govern ment of India and that adequate funds were being received from the government to complete the 125-kilometre phase II.
“How many new corridor will be constructed in how much time frame (in phase 3) is ye to be decided,“ he said.
Delhi government ha already written to the Centre of its inability to bear the phase III cost. The state and the Centre are equity partners in DMRC.
The state government ha asked the Delhi Developmen Authority to “shoulder the responsibility“ of Metro expansion since DDAs new colonies would benefit from the proposed expansion.
The DDA hasnt replied to the Delhi governments two let ters, requesting for funds fo the project, yet.
